日本の国民皆保険制度は、国民が少ない負担で必要な医療を受けられる世界でも優れた制度であるといえます。日本は世界に類を見ないスピードで高齢社会に突入し、国民医療費は年々増加する傾向にあります。一方で、女性の社会進出とライフスタイルの変化によって出生率が低下し、人口減少に歯止めが利かない現状では、医療費の国民ひとり当たりの負担が重くなることは間違いありません。
しかし、医療費全体に占める歯科医療費は1996年当時8.9％でしたが、2006年では7.6％と抑えられており、この10年間伸びていない事が分かります。
歯科医療費は伸びていませんが、歯科診療所数は右肩上がりに増えています。従って、診療所あたりの医療費収入は少なくなり、厳しい歯科医院経営が続いているように見受けられます。
歯科のマーケットは2003年4月の健康保険改定によって自己負担が2割から3割に増えたことにより、受診率が大きく落ち込みマーケット全体の需要が大きく減少しました。
しかし、インプラントをはじめとする矯正、審美、ホワイトニング、口臭治療などの自由診療は伸びてきており、若く健康でありたいとの要求は、新たなビジネスにつながっています。

Japanese national insurance is one of most superior system in the world as the people could have a medical treatment with less-expenses.
It is tendency to increase national medical expenses year after year because aging society has advanced due to the fulfillment of medical system.
On the other hand, the birth rate is decreasing thanks to advance of women into the society and the change of life-style. It caused the declining of the population. (graph) It is no doubt that the Japanese people will be obliged to bear more cost of national medical expenses.
The dental expense to national medical expenses was 8.9% in 1996 and 7.6% in 2006. (graph)
It says that the dental expenses had not increased during one decade.
The increasing ratio of dental expense has been slowed down but the number of dental clinic has been increasing. (graph)
Therefore the income per clinic has been decreasing and the management to run a dental clinic is very hard.
The individual bearing ratio of medical expenses has increased from 20% to 30% due to the revision of national insurance in April of 2003. As a result, as the dental examination has been decreasing and the market volume has been shrinking.
However the own expense medical treatment such as implant, orthodontics, aesthetics, whitening and halitosis treatment is expanding and the wish of people's health and beauty will lead to new business. (graph)
